MakeMyTrip: How Travel Platforms Win Consumer Attention

Travel booking was once a simple comparison exercise: find a flight or hotel, compare prices and make a reservation. Today, India's online travel market is increasingly a battle for something more valuable—consumer attention.

Travel platforms are competing not only on price, but also on convenience, personalised recommendations, loyalty, content and the ability to keep users inside their ecosystems.

MakeMyTrip is one of the clearest examples of this shift.

From Booking Platform to Travel Ecosystem

MakeMyTrip has expanded far beyond flight bookings. Its platform now covers hotels, homestays, buses, trains, cabs, holiday packages and other travel services, alongside its Goibibo and redBus brands.

The company's travel platform ecosystem gives it multiple opportunities to interact with the same customer before, during and after a journey.

That matters because travel is not a single transaction.

A customer may search for flights, compare hotels, book a bus, purchase travel protection and later look for activities or another trip.

The more of that journey a platform captures, the greater its potential customer lifetime value.

Scale Helps Win Attention

MakeMyTrip says it has more than 88 million lifetime transacted users, 566 million-plus app downloads and over 42 million room nights sold in FY26. It also says roughly three in ten domestic flyers book through its platforms.

These numbers create an important competitive advantage.

A large user base generates behavioural data, while a large supplier network creates more choices. More choices can attract users, and more users can attract hotels, airlines and other travel partners.

That creates a network effect around the platform.

AI Is Becoming the Next Battleground

The next competition may be less about who has the cheapest flight and more about who helps consumers make decisions faster.

MakeMyTrip's AI assistant, Myra, is an example.

In Q1 FY27, Myra handled more than 85,000 daily conversations, with over 45% coming from Tier-II and Tier-III cities. It can help users search, compare and complete bookings through a conversational interface, including voice interaction across eight Indian languages.

This could fundamentally change travel discovery.

Instead of typing multiple searches such as "best hotels in Goa," "flights from Delhi" or "things to do," consumers could simply describe what they want.

The platform then becomes a travel decision assistant, not merely a booking engine.

The Economics Are Improving

MakeMyTrip reported $10.4 billion in gross bookings for FY26, up 10.4% year over year in constant currency. Revenue reached approximately $1 billion, while results from operating activities increased 30.1% to $156 million.

More recently, Q1 FY27 gross bookings increased 19.9% to about $2.9 billion, while revenue rose 16.1%. Hotels, buses and other categories delivered particularly strong growth.

The diversification matters because reliance on airline bookings alone can expose a platform to pricing pressure and external disruptions.

The Real Battle Is Attention

The uncomfortable truth is that travel platforms are becoming increasingly similar.

Flights can be compared across multiple apps. Hotel inventory overlaps. Discounts can be copied.

That makes brand familiarity, personalised discovery, loyalty and convenience increasingly important.

MakeMyTrip's challenge is therefore not simply to sell more tickets.

It must convince travellers to begin their journey on its platform—and keep returning.

The travel platform that wins the next phase of India's market may not be the one offering the cheapest booking every time. It may be the one that becomes the most useful companion throughout the entire travel journey.

Original Analysis

MakeMyTrip's competitive advantage is shifting from inventory aggregation to attention ownership. AI, cross-selling, diversified travel categories and a large user base can increase the value of every customer relationship. The risk is that competitors can replicate individual features, making sustained differentiation increasingly dependent on data, brand and execution.
